Auction: 22109 - The David Hoover Collection of Crowns: 1551-1953
Lot: 2089
(x) NGC AU55 | George I (1714-1727), 'Roses and Plumes' Crown, 1726 DECIMO TERTIO, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. crowned shields cruciform, smaller roses and plumes in angles, nine strings to harp, lettered edge upwards, inverted Ns in TVTAMEN, ANNO, REGNI, 5h (Pywell-Phillips 260; Dr Erik Miller 37; Bull 1548 [R2]; ESC 115; Spink 3639A), light cabinet tone with peripheral residual flare, a hint of linear adjustment on flare, otherwise a really very good very fine, in NGC holder, graded AU55 (Cert. #2828116-001)
Provenance
BSJ 23, 28 September 2018, lot 2080 - toned, extremely fine - £5,010
Glendining-Baldwin, 30 October 1974, lot 45 - £500
Waite-Sanderson, Glendining, 18 January 1939, lot 135
Regrettably the Waite-Sanderson dispersal offered two 1726 Crowns (lots 134 and 135), with only the former illustrated. Study of this coin presents sufficient discrepancies that would unfortunately render the Lockett pedigree unsustainable with the current example
