James Whtifield was born in Watford, Hertfordshire in 1883. Embodied for militia service on 1 January 1902 with 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment he transferred to the Royal Field Artillery on 4 September 1902 and was posted to 36 Battery on 4 November. Returning to the reserve on 1 September 1905 and the next year to the 'B' class Reserve. Posted to 40 Brigade, Royal Field Artillery on 6 August 1914 he entered the war in France on 19 August and served until 15 September 1915 when he was demobilised having completed his service.
