Robert Fletcher was born at Weston, Yorkshire in 1886. Working as a mental attendant prior to the Great War he enlisted on 11 August 1914 with the Royal Army Medical Corps. Perhaps due to having already received medical training he entering the war in France less than a month after this on 27 August with No. 4 Field Ambulance. This unit was attached to 2nd Division, seeing action at Mons for which Fletcher is entitled to both a clasp a rosette for the 1914 Star, being listed as such in his records. They later saw fighting at Festubert, Aubers Ridge and the Second Battle of Artois.
Fletcher transferred to No.3 Field Ambulance in March 1916 and the next month to No.4 Field Ambulance. Finally he settled at 8 Stationary Hospital where he served until 14 May 1917 when he was posted to No. 55 General Hospital. Here he was demobilised on 29 May 1919.
