Victory Medal 1914-1919 (208480 F. G. Holmes. A.B. R.N.), minor contact marks, very fine

Frederick George Holmes was born at Woolwich, Kent on 10 November 1884. Enlisting on 25 February 1900 with the rank of Boy Class II he trained at H.M.S. Boscawen, being promoted Boy Class I on 28 November of that year. Seeing service off with the Channel Fleet aboard St. George from 3 October 1901, Holmes was promoted Able Seaman on 18 April 1904. Seeing continued service aboard a number of vessels including Hindustan, Dryad and Revenge he was with H.M.S. Monarch for the outbreak of the Great War.

Holmes was serving with the destroyer Ambuscade at the Battle of Jutland. This vessel served as part of the 4th Destroyer Flotilla, making three runs at the German Fleet. Holmes left Ambuscade on 17 October 1916 and was shore pensioned on 9 June 1921.
