Victory Medal 1914-1919 (M.18525 E. J. Clarke. Ar. Cr. R.N.), contact marks, polished, nearly very fine
Eric James Clarke was born at Sneinton, Nottinghamshire on 17 August 1896. Enlisting on 24 January 1916 with the rank of Armourer's Crew he served with this rank aboard H.M.S. Barham on 9 August 1916 for the bulk of the war, finally leaving the vessel on 18 January 1920. Serving ashore for the next three years Clarke was promoted Ordnance Artificer Class IV while at H.M.S. Excellent on 25 January 1920 and further advanced Ordnance Artificer Class III on 25 January 1923.
Posted to Iron Duke on 13 October 1923 Clarke served aboard her for three years, returning to shore service on 30 June 1926. Returning to sea on 8 November 1928 with H.M.S. Warspite he was promoted Ordnance Artificer Class II while aboard her on 25 January 1930. Finally promoted Ordnance Artificer Class I aboard H.M.S. Concord on 25 January 1932, continuing to serve, mainly ashore Clarke was shore pensioned on 23 January 1938. He was briefly remobilised in September 1939 but by October had been demobilised. Signing on again with the rank of Ordnance Artificer Class I (Pensioner) on 10 October he served ashore until 7 August 1941.
