Victory Medal 1914-1919 (341793 T. R. Northcott. Ch. Sh. Ck. R.N.), good very fine

Thomas Richard Northcott was born at Teignmouth, Devon on 1 January 1877. Enlisting with the Royal Navy as 2nd Cook's Mate on 11 November 1897 his first posting was to H.M.S. Agincourt. At the time Agincourt was a training ship and here Northcott was promoted Cooks Mate. He served aboard a number of vessels in his early career, notably H.M.S. Royal Sovereign, Triumph and Tenedos. Promoted Ship's Cook, Class II while aboard the latter on 1 October 1904 and further advanced Ship's Cook while ashore at Vivid I on 17 February 1910.

Serving ashore for some time Northcott joined H.M.S. Donegal and was promoted Chief Ship's Cook while aboard her on 1 August 1911. After another stretch ashore he was posted to H.M.S. Colossus on 25 November 1913. Northcott served with this ship throughout the early years of the war seeing little action, Colossus was not present for the action at Dogger Bank. However when the High Seas Fleet sallied out in an effort to trap the Grand Fleet he found himself sailing towards the Battle of Jutland.

As the lead ship of 5th Division Colossus, Captained by First Sea Lord Dudley Pound, was heavily engaged at Jutland. She took some minor hits and managed to land several on other vessels, firing a total of 109 shells. Northcott was to serve aboard her until 19 July 1918 when he was transferred via Vivid I to H.M.S. Cornwall, promoted Chief Petty Officer Cook on 17 May 1919 and later Chief Petty Officer Chief Cook on 30 April 1921 he was demobilised on 8 December 1919.
