1914 Star (Capt: J. Ward. Mon: R.), good very fine

James Ward served in France with 1/2nd Battalion Monmouthshire Regiment from November 1914. The battalion saw much action around Armentieres and the Second Battle of Ypres; Ward was lucky to survive the first few years of the war as, due to losses sustained, three battalions of the Monmouths' were amalgamated shortly after the battle to make one up-to-strength unit. Ward later appears to have been promoted Major (M.I.C., refers) and applied for his 1914 Star in 1921; he is additionally entitled to the British War and Victory Medals.
