1914 Star (L.6 / 3568. A.E. Barter, A.B. R.N.V.R. Collingwood Bttn. R.N.D.), about extremely fine

Adrian Elliot Barter, son of Doctor and Mrs. William Barter, of London, was born in September 1888 and after education which included a spell at King's College London, enlisted with the Royal Naval Division on 10 August 1914. Whilst the whole Division participated in the Siege of Antwerp (28 September - 10 October 1914), when the order came to withdraw from the rapidly-advancing German army (the famous 'race to the sea' incident) the 1st Naval Brigade failed to receive their orders in time and before long were cut off and surrounded: approximately 1,500 men were captured - including Barter, whose records note his being made Prisoner-of-War on 9 October and being interned in Holland until 18 November 1918. Whilst perhaps initially considered a lucky break (Collingwood Battalion were almost wiped out at Gallipoli) for Barter this was not to be - he died of influenza and pneumonia on 1 December 1918 and is buried at St. Pancras Cemetery, Finchley.
