James Cochrane was born at South Bak, Yorkshire in 1890, the son of Francis and Margret Cochrane of 5 Bell Lane. Broughty Ferry, Dundee. Serving with the Territorial Force, 4th Battalion, Black Watch, prior to the war he was time expired with this unit. On the outbreak of war Cochrane attested with the 3rd Highland Field Company, Royal Engineers on 23 November 1915. Transferring to the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) he was posted to 12th Battalion on 11 January 1917 before moving to 16th (Chatsworth Rifles) Battalion on 2 February 1917.
Serving with this Battalion during the Battle of Pilkem Ridge on 3 August 1917 when the Battalion Headquarters was hit by a shell. 3 officers and 30 other ranks were killed in the incident. Casualties for the day number 21 killed, 182 wounded and 3 missing, Cochrane was one of the missing but later declared dead on 3 August. He is remembered upon the Menin Gate Memorial; sold together with his original George V signed condolence slip along with copied research including Commonwealth War Graves details, casualty lists and handwritten research relating to the 3rd August 1917.
