Alfred Wright was born at Nottingham in 1898, the son of Alfred Herbert and Margaret Wright of 1 Eden Yard, Nottingham. Attesting on 19 April 1915 with 3rd/7th Battalion he transferred on the same day to 1st/7th Battalion. Entering the war in France on 3 March 1916, he was killed in action on 23 June near Foncquevillers, France. A letter from an officer in his Battalion to his mother goes into further detail, stating:
'I remember him at Belton Park, and recognised him when he joined us at Vimy. Last night he was sent out with a Covering party in front of our Trenches, and was hit by a German Bullet. He died instantly and painlessly, the bullet passing through his brain.'
Wright was buried at Foncquevillers Military Cemetery 'decently buried by our Chaplian at Foncquevillers' according to 2nd Lieutenant C. H. Burton; sold together with copied research including service records, correspondence and Commonwealth War Graves details as well as testimonials to his character taken from the Nottingham Evening Post 23 June 1917 and M.I.C. along with the recipient's original identity tag.
