Albert Leonard Cole was born in Willsden, London in 1896, the son of William Henry Cole of 14 Rutland Road, Harrow. Cole enlisted with the London Army Troop, Royal Engineers, Territorial Force with the number 1141 on 19 March 1914 while working as a Telegraphist. Embodied for service on 5 August 1914 at Westminster, he served at home until 26 December 1914 when he attested with the Royal Engineers directly from the Territorials. Cole entered the war in France on 18 January 1915 with Army Corps Headquarters, Signals Company. Falling ill first with at No. 35 Rawal Pindi General Hospital and later with enteric fever on 26 May 1915, being sent to No. 24 Stationary Hospital. Discharged from here on 6 June to the Depot Cole was posted to 'H' Cable Section on 31 July. Towards the end of the war he was again re-posted, this time to 'N' Corps Headquarters Signal Company on 16 October 1918. He was demobilised while serving with 31st Divisional Signal Company on 30 April 1914.
