Richard Walter Scott served in the Metropolitan Police before the Great War. Upon its outbreak, he enlisted in the London Scottish on 5 December 1914 and served in France from 4 July 1915, being wounded in action by gunshot wound to the hand on 25 September 1915. Following treatments to remove shrapnel, he transferred to the Army Service Corps. Scott went on to be posted to East Africa, suffering dreadfully with his health as a result. He was discharged in 1919 with a Silver War Badge for sickness and is further noted on the Police Commissioner's Roll for those Constables entitled to Great War Medals drawn up in January 1921 (M.I.C. confirms).
