Three: Bombardier J. Guites, 125th (Transvaal) Battery, South African Heavy Artillery, late South African Infantry and Cradock Commando who was killed in action on 26 January 1917 while the battery was stationed at Auchon Villers

Jacob Guites served with Cradock Commando in the first years of the war before joining the South African Infantry and finally the South African Heavy Artillery. Serving here with 125th Siege Battery they were at Auchon Villers on 26 January 1917 when they received fire from a German 9.3" H.V. gun firing from Essarts. This knocked out No.3 Gun and killed 3 other ranks, wounding two more. Guites was one of those killed, he is buried at Mailly Wood Cemetery, Maillery-Maillet; sold together with copied Commonwealth War Graves details and an extract from the Battalion War Diary.
