Fred Baker was born at Tiverton Cove, Devon in 1895, the son of Charles and Jane Baker of Allshire Cottage, Dulverton, Somerset. Working as a Farm Hand on Town Farm, Oakford prior to the war Baker followed his brother James (Medals sold in these rooms) into the Devon Regiment. He was never to serve with him however as his brother was killed on 18 December 1914 in France. Baker entered the war himself on 25 July 1915 with 8th Battalion. This unit saw heavy action throughout the war firstly at Loos then later the Somme, Arras and Passchendaele before transferring to the Italian front in November 1917 taking part in the crossing of the Piave and the Battle of Vittoria Veneto. Baker survived the war and discharged to the 'Z' Class Reserve on 16 March 1919.
