John Barlow was born at Wishaw, Lanarkshire in 1876, the son of Joseph and Annabella Barlow of 30 Windmillhill Street, Dalziel, Lanarkshire. Marrying Sarah Ann Cornfield on 30 September 1898 in Motherwell while he was living at 64 Old Square, Old Monkland and working as a Labourer for Frado Steel. Barlow attested at Newport, Monmouthshire with the South Wales Borderers on 23 September 1914 he was given the regimental number 14693. His papers note that he had previously served with the 2nd Battalion, Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteer Corps.
Joining the 3rd Battalion on 7 October 1914 and entered the war in France with them on 11 December 1914. Later returning to Britain on 31 May 1915 he transferred to the 2nd Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers on 26 October 1915. Posted to Egypt on 16 March 1916 he returned to France on 12 July 1916 and was reposted to 10th (Service) Battalion on 31 July. The Battalion joined the trenches South of Guillemont on 16 August 1916, a prelude to several confused days of fighting around 'Lonely Trench'. Barlow is listed as missing during this time with the date for his death fixed on 16 August. He is buried at Guillemont Road Cemetery; sold together with copied research including M.I.C. and Commonwealth War Graves details.
