Three: Private G. K. Deighton, 10th (Service) Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment, the son of a Boer War veteran who was tragically killed in action on the early hours of 4 June 1916

George Kilby Deighton was born at Hull, Yorkshire in 1896, the son of Thomas and Edith Deighton of 27 Vermont Street, Hull. His father served previously with the East Yorkshire Regiment during the Boer War, holding the rank of Sergeant and being discharged as medically unfit on 11 October 1900. Young Deighton worked as an Office Clerk for an oil extracting company prior to attestation Deighton enlisted on 9 April 1915 at Hull with the East Yorkshire Regiment. Entering the War in Egypt with 10th (Service) Battalion- also known as the 'Hull Commercials', on 22 December 1915. Here they manned the Defences of the Suez Canal before transferring to France on 7 March 1916.

Deighton was killed in action on 4 June 1916, the Battalion war diary makes mention of a heavy exchange of artillery night of 3-4 June with the bulk of the German reply taking place in the early hours of 4 June. 20 enlisted men are noted as killed in action on 4 June with a further 47 wounded. Deighton is buried at Sucrerie Military Cemetery, Colincamps; sold together with contemporary photographs of the recipients grave and copied research including Commonwealth War Graves details, Battalion War Diary and M.I.C. as well as medal rolls and the service records of the recipient's father Thomas Deighton.
