Pair: Lieutenant-Commander J. M. Main, Royal Naval Reserve

1914-15 Star (Lieut. J. Mc. C. Main. R.N.R.); British War Medal 1914-20 (Lieut. J. Mc. C. Main. R.N.R.), good very fine

James McCarthy Main, born May 1887, was appointed Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Navy Reserve in July 1913, and promoted Lieutenant in August 1915. Serving variously with H.M.S. M 17 (a shore bombardment vessel) and H.M.S. Riviera (a seaplane tender whose aircraft were used for spotting land targets for Royal Navy ships off the coast of Belgium), he earned much praise and many positive comments in his confidential reports, including: 'Handles the men well, a most loyal & reliable officer' and 'An exceptionally good executive officer. Shows great tact in the handling of men & carries out his duties with great ability & zeal'.
Demobilised in 1919, Main appears to have remained in the Navy and was promoted Lieutenant-Commander in August 1923.
