William Beattie was born at Liverpool on 3 July 1889, the son of John and Jane Beattie of 56C Northumberland Street, Liverpool. Have worked previously as a Scaler he enlisted on 25 September 1908 with the rank of Stoker Class III and was promoted Stoker Class I on 25 September 1909. He served on various ships prior to the Great War including H.M.S. Mars and H.M.S. Orion. Beattie was transferred to Hawke Battalion on 15 September 1914 and joined the war at Gallipoli. He was posted as missing between 4-6 June and was confirmed dead on 14 September 1915. His medals were sent to his next-of-kin, his aunt Elizabeth Throwell, 33 Highson Street, Liverpool; sold together with copied research including service record, medal roll and Commonwealth War Graves details.
