Archibald William Gray was born at Charing Heath, Kent in 1895, the son of Archibald and Eliza Gray of 163 Godington Road, Ashford, Kent. Prior to enlistment he worked as a Bookstall Clerk, attesting on 25 May 1915. Entering the War in France on 6 September 1915 he was posted to 166th Company, Machine Gun Corps on 9 March 1916. Admitted to 90th North Lancashire Field Ambulance as a result of an abscess on 22 July 1916 he returned to his unit the next day. Gray was killed in action on 9 August 1916 and is buried at Serre Road Cemetery; sold together with copied service records, Commonwealth War Graves details and extracts relating to the attack on Guillemont on 8 August 1916.
