Robert Foster was born at Monk Bretton, Yorkshire in 1862, the son of John and Annie Foster of St. Michael, Leeds. Marrying Amelia Jane Whetstone on 7 April 1890, Foster enlisted with 8th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment and served in France from 6 April 1915. He was killed in action on 3 September 1916 and is buried in the Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval; sold together with copied photograph of the recipient's grave and copied research including M.I.C. and Commonwealth War Graves details.
