Four: Rifleman S. Maddocks, 1/5th Battalion, King's (Liverpool) Regiment, who was killed in action at Richebourg-l'Avoué during the Battle of Festubert on 16 May 1915

Samuel Maddocks was born at Everton, Liverpool in July 1891, the son of Thomas and Ellen Maddocks. Working as a Dock Labourer prior to enlistment, he attested for the 5th Battalion on 14 July 1913 as a Territorial. Marrying Ethel Josephine Cupit of 9 Bewley Street, Richdale, at St. George, Everton on 4 August 1914, Maddocks served in France from 21 February 1915. He was soon in trouble, being written up by his Company Commander for 'misuse of the latrines'. The Battalion was part of an attack upon Richebourg on 16 May 1915, with the first wave moving off at 01:30hrs closely followed by the second. They were met by heavy machine gun and artillery fire and were soon pushed back to their start line. Maddocks was killed during the attack and is commemorated upon the Le Touret Memorial; sold together with original documents of issue for the recipient's campaign medals and a newspaper cutting from the Liverpool Express as well as copied research including Commonwealth War Graves details, casualty lists and a copied M.I.C.
