William Morris was born at Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight, the son of Charles Morris of 5 Caesars Road, Newport. Later, while still stationed at Egypt and the Sudan, he was sentenced for a range of crimes including 'Having a Rusty Rifle', 'Firing at the Wrong Target' and 'Laughing on Parade'. Transferring to India on 5 February 1913 he remained there until 12 October 1914 before returning to Britain. Shortly afterward he entered the war in France, on 20 December 1914. After the conclusion of the 'Race to the Sea' German forces focused on a breakthrough at the Ypres Salient, with one attack falling on Saint Eloi on 14 March 1915. The 4th Battalion Rifle Brigade was able to counter-attack on the night of 14-15 March and managed to retake several trenches, however Morris was killed on the morning of 15 March; sold together with copied research including service records, M.I.C. and Commonwealth War Graves details.
