William Joseph Orton was born at Cliff Hill, Leicestershire and lived at Stanton-Under-Bordon, Leicester. Enlisting at Leicester he served with the 1st Battalion, Coldstream Guards until he was killed in the opening stages of the Battle of Flers–Courcelette on 15 September 1916. He is commemorated upon the Thiepval Memorial; sold together with copied M.I.C., Commonwealth War Graves Details and two copied photographs of the Stanton-Under-Bardon War Memorial along with the original OHMS enveloped addressed to 'Mrs W. J. Orton, Stanton-under-Barton'.
