Three: Private J. E. Sampson, 15th/17th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own), who died as a prisoner of war on 23 July 1918, his comrades raised a subscription to commemorate him

John Edward Sampson was born at Leeds, Yorkshire in 1901, the son of Edith Sampson, 3 Rock Place, Leeds. Sampson joined the 15th/17th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) and joined them in France, he was taken prisoner here on 27 March 1918 at Ervillers. Taken to Munster, Germany, where he died on 23 July 1918 in an accident, he was buried there at Cologne Southern Cemetery by his fellow prisoners and a subscription taken from British, French and Russian prisoners paid for a wreath and flowers for him. News of Sampson's death tragically arrived home just a few days after a letter he had written to his parents informing them that he was well; sold together with copied research including a copied photograph, Commonwealth War Graves details, a transcription from Yorkshire Evening News which relates to the recipient's death and handwritten research.
