Herbert Smalley was born at Radford Nottingham in 1898, the son of Herbert and Sarah Smalley of 45 Kennington Road, Old Radford, Nottingham. Enlisting with 2nd/4th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry at Nottingham, this Battalion entered the war in France in January 1917 as part of 62nd (West Riding) Division. This formation participated in the battle of Arras notably at Bullecourt and it is here that Smalley was killed on 5 May 1917, he is commemorated upon the Arras Memorial; sold together with copied research including M.I.C., Commonwealth War Graves details and copied memorial scroll.
