John Henry Kennel was born at Ripley, Derby on 7 March 1888, the son of Timothy and Sarah Kennel of Arundel Road, Whittington Moor. Marring Emily Hobbs at Windsor on 17 May 1913 he moved to that city permanently, living at 5 Red Lion Row, Thames Avenue. Kennel enlisted on 12 June 1906 and entered the war in France on 12 August 1914. The Battalion was in action at Mons (clasp) and the Marne. Going into action again during the Battle of the Aisne, they were part of the fighting on 13-14 September 1914. Kennel was killed during the action here and is commemorated on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial; sold together with copied research including .M.I.C., a typed transcription from De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour, 1914-1919 and Commonwealth War Graves details as well as information on the Battle of the Aisne and copied photographs including a portrait of the recipient and a picture of his house in Windsor along with an original identity tag.

John Henry Ernest Kennel, also spelled Kennell, enlisted with the Royal Artillery in 1935. Leaving the military prior to the Second World War, Kennell rejoined for service with the Royal Berkshire Regiment on 24 June 1940. Later transferred to the 2nd Reserve Field Regiment on 7 June 1941, he saw service with 4th (Reserve) 61st and 70th Anti-Tank Regiments. He is noted as living at 53 West Crescent, Vale Estate, Windsor.
