James Clarence Ethelbert Scholes was born at Torquay, Devon in 1890, the son of Richard and Emily Scholes of 49 St. Marychurch Road, Torquay. Enlisting in Liverpool, he served in France from 7 November 1915. The 18th Battalion was not heavily engaged prior to the Battle of the Somme however during the advance on Montauban they were caught in the open by a German machine gun post and suffered immense losses. The majority of over 200 casualties suffered by the Liverpool Pals Regiments on the First Day of the Somme were from the 18th Battalion, although they did take their objective. Scholes managed to survive going 'over the top' on 1 July, but he was killed in action the next day, 2 July 1916. He is buried in the Peronne Road Cemetery, Maricourt; sold together with copied M.I.C., Soldiers Died in the Great War entry and Commonwealth War Graves details.
