Henry Hebburn was born in 1875 and was a labourer upon his enlistment at Aldershot in December 1893, having been serving with the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Royal West Surrey Regiment since May 1893. Having served in Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Singapore and the East Indies, he saw active service in South Africa from 11 January-31 July 1902, earning a £5 war gratuity. He joined the Army Reserve in November 1902.
Upon the outbreak of the Grear War, Hebburn was mobilised at Winchester on 17 August 1914, being posted to the 2nd Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment. He served in France from 5 January 1915 and went into the trenches north of Neuve Chapelle on 11 January 1915. He was admitted to No. 6 Clearing Hospital on 25 January and was diagnosed with disorderly action of the heart at No. 13 General Hospital on 26 January. Discharged from hospital on 17 February at Rouen, he was evacuated home as a result of a gastric ulcer on 5 March 1915. Posted to the Depot, he joined the 3rd Reserve Battalion at Whitley Bay, being discharged with a Silver War Badge, no longer physically fit for War Service on 30 July 1915, with a pension for life. Hebburn died at Romsey, Hampshire, on 19 April 1948; sold together with copied research.
