Duncan Kennedy was born on 7 February 1865 at Forfar and was a labourer upon enlisting in the Plymouth Division, Royal Marines Light Infantry at London on 7 August 1884. Having served off South Africa during the Boer War, he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve in June 1906. During the opening shots of the Great War he landed at Ostend, also serving at Dunkirk and in the Defence of Antwerp, being lucky to get away. He was demobilised in August 1919.
