Walter Griffiths was born at Fulham, London. Serving in South Africa during the Boer War, Griffiths left the Army for the Special Reserve prior to the Great War. With the formation of the 3rd Cavalry Field Ambulance on 14 August 1914 by Major J. W. West, they arrived in France on 17 August 1914. They served throughout the 'war of movement' in 1914, including a close call at La Cateau when ‘A’ Section just escaped the town as the Germans entered it. They joined in the advance to the Aisne and later set up around Ypres in 1915 and the Somme in 1916. Griffiths was killed in action on 13 May 1917 and is buried at the Ebblinghem Military Cemetery; sold together with copied medal rolls, Commonwealth War Graves details and M.I.C., along with the recipient’s death certificate and information on the 3rd Cavalry Field Ambulance.
