British War Medal 1914-20 (241653 Pte. J. Oliphant. Bord. R.), lacquered, very fine

Joseph Oliphant was born at Wigton, Cumberland in 1880 and worked as a farm labourer prior to enlistment. Marrying Ester Gowan at Wigton Parish Church in 1900, with issue of two sons. Enlisting with the Reserve on 23 February 1916 he was mobilised on 15 June and posted to the Border Regiment. He served on the Western Front from 3 July 1917 and was posted to 11th (Lonsdale) Battalion, being killed in action on 12 March 1918. Oliphant was at first buried at Captain's Farm Cemetery but later exhumed and buried at Artillery Wood Cemetery as well as being commemorated upon the Wigton Memorial under the name 'Jos. Oliphant'.
