The British War Medal awarded to Private V. S. Procter, 9th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, who was killed in action on 23 July 1916 at the Battle of Pozieres
British War Medal 1914-20 (2872 Pte. V. S. Procter. 9 Bn. A.I.F.), good very fine
Victor Stanley Procter was born at Liverpool, England and enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 8 June 1915. He joined the 9th Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir on 7 January 1916 and landed at Marseilles on 3 March 1916. Procter was posted missing on 23 June 1916 and was latterly confirmed as having been killed in action at the Battle of Pozieres. His body was exhumed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and re-buried in the A.I.F. Burial Ground at Flers.
The action had been the Battalion's first major action when they attacked on the extreme right of the line and it was during this action that Private John Leak won, with the bayonet, the Battalion's only Victoria Cross.
It is interesting to note that in the list of effects returned to his mother, Mrs A. Procter, at 257 Boaler Street, Liverpool, noted a 'small autograph book' being enclosed. A small book, which includes an inscription from a sweetheart in Melbourne, is included with the Lot and is presumably one and the same.
