[D.C.M.] London Gazette 11 March 1916:
'He assisted the wounded in exposed parts of damaged trenches under exceptionally heavy shell fire, and, although wounded himself, he remained for several hours encouraging his men to hold an exposed part of the line during the bombardment.'

Charles Henry Steel was born at Ormesby, Yorkshire in 1890 and enlisted in the 18th Hussars in 1909. He served in France from 15 August 1914 (1914 Trio) until he was wounded on 17 May 1915. He returned to the front from 28 June 1915 and was discharged on 3 April 1919.
His D.C.M. and M.M. - with unofficial replacement 1914 Trio - were sold at Dominic Winter Auctioneers in December 2020.
