British War Medal 1914-20 (Lieut. G. Waddell.), pawnbroker's number '5' before rank, very fine
George Waddell served in France with the Royal Highlanders from 14 August 1916 being sent home sick on 23 December 1916. Returned to the front on 11 July 1917, he was severely wounded with the 6th Battalion at High Wood on 21 July 1917 whilst filling grenades.
Besides his military service, Waddell was a prominent golfer and pre-War had played at Douglas Park, also twice making the Evening Times final. In early 1922, when hailed as the 'well known Glasgow amateur....a plus 3 man, and has won many prizes', he was made Secretary at Royal Portrush, the location to which his Medals were sent.
