Provenance
'A Distinguished Collection', purchased en bloc via Spink, August 2018

"Magnus", Spink 212, 28-29 March 2012, lot 878 - toned, almost very fine - £13,000
Thomas William James David Dupree, collection purchased en bloc by Spink, 1989 [with his ticket] - £2,000

Interestingly the Numismatic Circular has a listing for a die-linked Southwark Sovereign at this time (cf. December 1990, no. 7542 - £3,750; July-August 1991, no. 4482 - £3,500; December 1992, no. 7403 - £2,950; June 1993, no. 3431 - £2,950). From the supplied plates, it is clearly not this coin, but presumably also formed part of the Dupree cabinet of which this marginally inferior specimen was originally offered at £2,250 and eventually sold for £2,000 based on the surviving Spink tickets.
