Auction: 22027 - The "Ellerby Area" Hoard of English Gold Coins
Lot: 111

The Remarkable "Ellerby Area" Hoard of English Gold Coins (1610-1727) | NGC VF20 | Charles II (1660-1685), 'Royal African Company', 'Elephant and Castle' Guinea, 1679, 'short' CAROLVS', fourth laureate head right, E&C below, rev. no stop after HIB, broken M in MAG, crowned shields cruciform, emblem-adorned sceptres in angles, strings to harp not visible, edge obliquely milled, 8.22g [126.9grns], 6h (PAS: YORYM-18E848 = BM 2019 T668/94 this coin; MCE 81; Farey 205 [ER]; EGC 266 [R]; MCE 81; Spink 3345), a minor edge bruise at reverse 5 o'clock, otherwise bright and lustrous, a bolder fine, extremely rare, with NGC 'Ellerby' Certification, graded VF20 (#6380983-094)

All the dates of Charles II Guineas with Elephant and Castle are very rare. Bull rates them between R4 and R6 up to 1677, but for some reason rates the later dates much lower, from R2 down to R. Farey rates them all ER. The CoinArchives database bears witness to this error. Only three examples of the 1679 E&C variety Guinea have appeared at major worldwide public auction since the millennium, this one of the finest, despite the fact the 1679 Guinea is the most commonly encountered date of such issue.
