One Penny Envelope
A160, 1840 (25 May) envelope to Chard Place, Kent cancelled by a neat red Maltese Cross, the reverse with open circle Canterbury despatch c.d.s. With the original enclosure to which a Penny Black has been attached. The letter reads, "... I enclose the letter in one of the new envelopes. How do you like them? There is another stamp sold but they can be easily removed and are very ugly. I have affixed one of them on the corner of this paper to show you..." and continues with details of how to use the stamps.
The Penny Black is plate 2, FK with large to very large even margins. A delightful item throwing light on the new novel ways of posting letters. Photo
