Execution of Archbishop Laud, AR Medal, c. 1680, by J. Roettier, GVIL • LAVD •ARCHIEPISC • CANTVAR • X • IAN • 1644 •, bust right, in robes and cap, rev. SANCTI • CAROLI • PRAECVRSOR *, infant angel ascending to heaven, carrying the mitre and crozier, followed by two others bearing the King's crown, sceptre and orb; below, view of London, plain edge, 58mm, 78.78g (Eimer 145; MI 315/147; van Loon II, 27), with the usual die flaw below bust, a handful of contact marks, including before the face, nevertheless with an attractive lustre to lightly frosted and toned surfaces, extremely fine and scarcely offered

This medal was executed by John Roettier after the Restoration, and was perhaps one of a projected series to commemorate some of those who had suffered in the cause of the Church and of Royalty. The legend on the reverse gave offence to several persons, who considered it too bold a parallel between Laud and St. John the Baptist.
