Marriage of William of Orange to Princess Mary, AR Medal, 1677, by Nicholas Chevalier, GVILH • III • D • G • PRIN • AVR • HOL • ET • WES • GV •, armoured bust right, rev. MARIA • D • G • AVR • PRIN • NAT • DE • IORC •, draped bust left, hair breaded with pearls, plain edge, 42mm, 30.73g (Eimer 256; MI i, 568/235; Farquhar 1910/208; van Loon III, 222), with some faint contact marks, including a small die flaw to Mary's neck, nevertheless the surfaces richly toned and with a flashy brilliance to fields, extremely fine and scarcely offered
In 1677, William, then the Prince of Orange, married his first cousin Mary, the daughter of the Duke of York, later King James II of England . Their joint reign lasted until Mary's untimely death from smallpox at the age of thirty-two in 1694.
