Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (216822. G. A. Townsend, Sign. H.M.S. Colleen.), contact marks, some edge bruising, very fine

George Arthur Townsend was born at Hampstead, London on 1 December 1884 and enlisted as a Boy Class II on 7 August 1901. He began to train in signals and while doing so was posted aboard the training ship H.M.S. Lion were he was made Boy Class I on 5 June 1902 and Signalman on 1 January 1905.

Townsend's first posting afloat was Duke of Wellington which he joined on 8 April 1904. Later serving aboard a number of vessels including Revenge, Sappho and Philomel, prior to the latter's transfer to the New Zealand Naval Forces.

On the Outbreak of the Great War Townsend was stationed with the Acasta-class destroyer H.M.S. Victor. However he was transferred to H.M.S. Patridge in the summer of 1916, at the time part of the Fourteenth Destroyer Flotilla. He left this ship on 30 June 1917 and did not see service afloat for the rest of the war. Receiving his L.S. & G.C. while at H.M.S. Colleen, Townsend was invalided as a result of eye problems on 5 June 1919; sold together with copied service papers.
