Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (288448 John Robertson, Sto. Po, H.M.S. Venus.), number officially corrected, minor contact wear, very fine
John Robertson was born at Fife, Scotland and worked as a miner prior to enlisting on 12 April 1898 with the rank of Stoker Class II. Completing his training with H.M.S. Rodney Robertson was posted to H.M.S. Duke of Wellington on 3 May 1899.
Prior to the Great War he also saw service aboard a number of other vessels including Leander, Sappho and Vengeance. Robertson was serving with H.M.S. Acasta on the outbreak of the Great War with the rank of Stoker Petty Officer.
Still with this vessel on 16 December 1914 he took part in the action off the coast of Yorkshire in which Acasta and the rest of the 4th Destroyer Flotilla clashed with the German raiding force which had bombarded the towns of Hartlepool, Scarborough and Whitby. This formation had been thrown out ahead of the British fleet to screen their advance and early in the morning they met the German screen of light cruisers.
The British ships were outclassed and Lynx, Ambuscade and Hardy were damaged with Hardy hit the hardest. Acasta was part of Shark's division during the action.
Robertson was transferred ashore before the Battle of Jutland on 31 August 1915 and posted to Attentive II. the depot ship for the Dover Patrol. He was to see service afloat again however, aboard P24 a coastal forces patrol ship from 1 January 1917. Finally demobilised on 3 June 1920 Robertson joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 24 June 1920; sold together with copied service records.
