British War Medal 1914-20 (9348 Pte. C. Lewis. R. W. Fus.), edge bruising, very fine
Charles Augustus Lewis was born at Pill, Monmouthshire in 1889 where he worked as a Labourer until joining the 1st Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers at Cardiff in 1907. Prior to the Great War he was posted with the Regiment to Burma from 7 October 1909-30 December 1910 and later India from 31 December 1910-5 February 1914. During his time here Lewis had some trouble with his commanding officers, being disciplined twice once for being absent from Military Police duty and later drunk at the soldier’s club and a second time for drunkenness. These offences occurred at Quetta between 14 December 1912-14 June 1913. Returning to Britain on the eve of war the Regiment formed part of the British Expeditionary Force with Lewis himself entering the war in France on 4 October 1914. He died at the Cafe of Madame Loiseau, 47 Rue Francais Calais on 9 December 1914 of congestion of the lungs and heart failure. Further entitled to a 1914 Star with Clasp and Victory medal.
