Arthur McDonald Hastie was born at Clapham on 24 December 1889 and was an engine cleaner upon his joining the Royal Navy on 22 March 1909. During the Great War he served aboard Woolwich, before being at the submarine base Dolphin from 21 December 1916-29 September 1918, when he joined Vindictive. Hastie was shore discharged on 19 September 1920.
