William Samuel Martin was born at Brancaster, Norfolk on 13 April 1879. Enlisting on 8 February 1898 with the rank of Stoker Class II his first posting was aboard HMS Furious from 10 January 1899. He served in this capacity aboard a number of vessels including Illustrious and Sutlej before being promoted Stoker Class I aboard HMS Swiftsure on 1 July 1906. Later advanced Leading Stoker aboard the same ship on 1 March 1908 he served aboard the minelayer Latona during the First World War. Promoted Stoker Petty Officer on 1 November 1915 he remained aboard this vessel until 20 December 1918. Martin was demobilised on 7 May 1920 from HMS Pembroke II.
