Privately Carried Across the Channel
1807 (1 Aug.) entire letter from Chatham to Paris, carried to France and posted in Calais; charged "30" decimes in black ink with red crayon cross hatching in the upper right corner (this signifies a registered letter) and a manuscript "chargé No." in the top left corner; the reverse bears the French despatch c.d.s. in red (27.8) and there is a small remainder of red wax seal in the lower left corner. A clean and delightful letter making use of being carried or smuggled to France to reduce postage

The Foreign Branch registered mail was very expensive (5/-) and would not have covered registraton in France. The postal rate of 30 decimes is 15 decimes for postage and 15 decimes for registration. The French post only charge double postage for registered mail
