1843 (7 July) envelope to Nancy marked "Registered Letter" and charged "2 3" (2/3d.) with London Old Cavendish Street Paid Maltese Cross despatch datestamp, wide-type crowned "registered" in red and "P-D" in oval plus a light strike of "angl/2/boulogne" c.d.s. in red; the reverse with Nancy arrival (10.7) along with four large "départ/et/arrivée/4" wax seals (these were applied to all registered mail at the point of entry, these being from Calais). The flap bears the impression of Mitchell & Son's Improved Safety Envelope in blue

Paid to destination, the postage rate is 5d. for British single rate, 10d. French double rate (up to ½oz.) and 1/- registration; these were fixed by the Postal Convention of 1843
