Chusan: 1860 (9 Aug.) blue envelope to Lieut. Geoffrey Mairis, "Expeditionary Force, Chusan, China", sent "Via Marseilles" bearing 1855-57 6d. with 2d. Blue plate 8 tied by Clifton duplex, the reverse with London (10.8) and part Hong Kong (19.9) c.d.s.
The letter includes, "... I read that a portion of the artillery of the marines force to be left ... to stand fast, which we were very glad to acquiesce, as the climate of the north is subject to great fluctuation ... Lord Elgin acted very perfectly in diluting that the ... Regt which volunteered from Bombay for China Service...". A rare letter addressed to Chusan which was the base used for the advance on Peking; by the time this letter was due to be delivered the troops would have been very close to Peking
1860年8月9日由英國Clifton 寄出經馬賽到舟山中國遠征軍Lieut Geoffrey Mairis 信, 貼1655-57年6d.和2d.各一枚, 銷Clifton "959" 及日期戳. 而封背有倫敦8月10日及不全香港9月19日中轉戳. 信內容述及這封信包括: “...我讀到海軍陸戰隊的一部分大砲將被留下...堅守, 我們很高興獲得這一點, 因為北方的氣候波動很大......埃爾金勳爵在稀釋......從孟買自願參加中國服務的...... ". 此信到達舟山時, 收信人正值北上與清廷進行第三次大沽口戰事中. 並非常接近北京.
