H.M.S. 'Vulcan': 1861 (23 May) envelope to Capt. A.C. Strode, China Station, "Via Marseilles", bears 1855-57 6d. with 1d. Red and 2d. Blue tied by London W.C. duplex, there are no other postal markings; the 6d. adhesive just runs off the edge of the envelope and has small faults.
With the original letter, either from his father or brother, which includes, "... I am glad to see your interesting account of Japan. It is one of those places as much, or more secluded from the world than China was before our troops entered Pekin, but now I must say this expedition has enlightened the minds of the Chinese, as were as made our own countrymen better acquainted with the assessment and disposition of those who only termed us Barbarians! ... if 10 or 12000 men are killed and wounded, but rest assured it will always carry weight with it, and Lord Elgin in speaking of it at a public dinner gave due credit to the navy..."
