H.M.S. 'Camilla': 1859 (13 Feb.) opened-out envelope from Albert Markham addressed to Wisconsin, U.S.A. with manuscript "12", "6" (crossed through) and handstruck "33" and New York Am Pkt c.d.s. (22.4), the reverse with London transit (5.4). With the original letter which includes, "... we are now at Hong Kong. I thought we should we should never come down, they kept us so long up the Canton River ... we were inspected by the Admiral who was very much pleased and said the ship was a credit to the station ... I don't think the Camilla will remain in Hong Kong more than a fortnight longer..." The flap has been replaced
H.M.S. 'Camilla' was presumed foundered in September 1860 on the China Station (off the coast of Japan) with the loss of all hands. By this time Albert Markham was sailing on a different ship. He later designed the flag of New Zealand.
