Occupation of Canton
1858 (29 Dec.) a very similar envelope with enclosure from Dr Alex Gibbon to his aunt in Aberdeen; the envelope printed "via marseilles." in red, rated "9" and with a good strike of the type 10 boxed "paid" in red with London Paid transit (11.2), the reverse with Hong Kong type 9 c.d.s. (30.12) and Aberdeen arrival (12.2), the recipient's notes written on the front of the envelope.


The letter is headed, "Tinqua's Gardens - near Canton" and is described as, "Colonel Burney having found a fine party to visit these Gardens about 2 miles up the river beyond the western suburbs of Canton ... they belong to a rich Mandarin, who lives in Canton ..." and goes on to give some details of the gardens, "...no word of Lord Elgin yet, or when our troops are likely to leave Canton..." and continues with details of the curios that the officers were buying locally
